Professor Petersen is a life-long Episcopalian, ordained in 1966. He has served parishes in Iowa, California, Wisconsin, and New York, but principally his ministry has been seminary teaching and continuing education of clergy and laity. Teaching liturgics, the church-in-history, and spirituality in literature reflect his deep concern for understanding the dynamics and requisites of ecclesial life and mission.

Fr. Petersen has served as Deputy/Alternate to five General Conventions and as member of the BTE, the GBEC, the SCER, and the Committee to Nominate a New Presiding Bishop. He is vice-president of the Anglican Theological Review board. Ecumenically, he has served on the Lutheran-Episcopal Dialogue and as delegate to the Consultation on Church Union. Presently, he is a member of the International Anglican Liturgical Conference and the Anglican-Lutheran International Commission.

Professional memberships include the North American Academy of Liturgy, North American Academy of Ecumenists, Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission, and Societas Liturgica.
